The 4 ‘p’s of success online

What’s a good cup of coffee, served with a smile got to do with SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) and its role in building a successful online business is about the 4 ‘p’s. Passion, personal relationships, process and persistence. Not unlike a good cup of coffee, served with a smile.

Like everything in life, rewards follow process and persistence. But those alone will not work without good personal relationships which build trust. And passion, really about caring about what you are offering and to whom you are offering it.

Whether you business is landscape gardening, selling life insurances or self help services, your success will be based on the personal relationships you develop with your customers and suppliers.

Take our local coffee shop. It has just been taken over by two young men. Previously there was a reasonably regular customer base who liked the coffee, but mostly it was half empty and no one was there after 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Now it hums, it is thriving, the tables are full all of the time.

Why? Because the two young men are experts in personal relationships. They remember your name. They remember your preferred coffee. No matter how busy they are, they always smile and ask after you. They almost whistle while they work. Clearly they love what they do and who they do it for. That is personal relationship and passion to a tee.

But they also have process, nothing is wasted, not their time or that of their waiting staff or their clients. Things happen, seemingly seamlessly. It looks effortless. Process at its peak.

And they have been persistent. This success was not overnight. When their new sign went up, there was resistance, people really dislike change. The shop was quiet and empty for a while. Then the word started to spread. At first new clients appeared as a trickle and then as a torrent. Today, they are truly successful.

This anecdote perfectly matches online business success. If you start with an offer you are passionate about, deliver great quality content and lots of it, the right visitors will find you, be pleased that they did and come back over and over again.

The process to do this? Professional SEO. Like any good business model, if you are a great coffee maker, you don’t also want to be the coffee grower. The same goes for your online business. Know what your skills are and work good processes around those. Outsource everything else, especially online, where your goal needs to be high volumes of your most wanted clients, who are looking for exactly what you are offering.

Much of this is tedious and can be done effectively using affordable SEO services.
